KSL – Five men who claimed to have been abused as youth by Scouting leaders in two separate Idaho cities, are suing the Boys Scouts of America and the LDS Church, with the lawsuit saying both organizations deceptively presented the youth program as a safe and wholesome activity for boys.
You mean to tell me Boy Scouts of America isn’t always a safe and wholesome activity for boys? Boy Scouts is about as American of an institution as you can get. Camping, tying knots, using tools, just outdoorsing in general. Pretty manly if you ask me. Diddling little kids though? No. Not acceptable. Make Boy Scouts great again.
If it wasn’t for the Boy Scouts, I’m sure we’d have a lot more bad outdoorsing to talk about on the podcast.
The fact that the LDS church has always been tied to this is also, well, not greaaaat. They are the largest sponsor of Boy Scouts in the nation, so of course it’s going to be roped into these stories.
These, of course, are nothing new. This kind of news has been coming out for years. The LA Times compiled a database and a number of other stories if you really are interested in more.
Growing up in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Utah was also fascinating to me. I didn’t know it at the time, but we sought out non-LDS sponsored troops because, in Utah, you guessed it, that’s pretty much all of them. I don’t think it really would make a difference, though. Learning the outdoors isn’t a religious thing. But I never was in an LDS-sponsored troop so who knows.
Regarding the lawsuit however, bold claim by these guys saying the organization was “deceptively presented” to youth as safe and wholesome. Let’s see how it works out for them.
